North Utah Fire Damage Mitigation - SERVPRO of North Utah County
You may visualize fire damage as charred remains and ruined structures, a situation common in catastrophic fire events. However, the more common home fires leave lighter, yet widespread damages, primarily where the fire produces high smoke volumes. As Kent Norton, one of our North Utah clients put it "I had a fire damaged stove which completely filled my house with smoke, damage. I mean, every room in my house was covered."
Since it was only a grease fire on the stove, severe damages such as scorched or collapsed surfaces did not occur. However, the meat protein and oils left sticky, odorous deposits all over the house. Kent called us to help with cleanup and deodorization to restore his property to preloss conditions. The speed of mobilizing restoration resources was the first thing that impressed him. He says "I called SERVPRO, they came almost immediately…" We even found some of the smoke plumes yet to dissipate from most of the rooms. Fortunately, we brought sufficient air movers, which we used to blow the remaining smoke out, improving the conditions for a thorough inspection of the house and the final cleanup.
In many of the rooms, we found most of the soot residue deposited on the upper parts of the walls. Such residue patterns are a regular occurrence because smoke moves through convection currents, in which hot air rises, forcing cooler air down. The same currents spread smoke deposits in rooms far from the fire source since doors, and other physical barriers do not hinder smoke movement.
For proper deodorization of the odors from these deposits, our SERVPRO technicians had to clean all the rooms, even surfaces with no visible deposits. Being thorough further impressed Mr. Kent and in his words, we "scrubbed the walls down, cleaned everything I hadn't cleaned up, and then ended up painting and redoing my whole home." When we finished, he was not only happy that his home was restored to its preloss state, but also because it was effortless on his part.
